Step 3: Review the draft critically

This is the step people skip, and it's the most important. AI can produce confident-sounding content that's off in subtle ways—an activity that's too advanced, timing that doesn't add up, or a factual detail that needs verification. Read the draft as an editor, not a passive reader. You remain the subject-matter expert. Always confirm facts, dates, and figures against reliable sources before teaching them.

Step 4: Customize with follow-up prompts

Instead of manually rewriting, ask for targeted revisions:

"Make the warm-up shorter and add a real-world example about pizza slices."

"Add a differentiated version for students who finish early."

"Rewrite the assessment as three quick exit-ticket questions."

Each request takes seconds and keeps the plan coherent.

Step 5: Generate the extras

Once the core plan is solid, use the same conversation to spin off supporting materials: a slide outline, a printable worksheet, discussion questions, or a rubric. Because the AI already has the context, these come out consistent with your lesson.

Customizing for Different Audiences

The workflow scales beyond K-12. A corporate trainer can ask for a plan pitched to busy professionals with real workplace scenarios. A small-business owner running a customer onboarding session can request a plan focused on practical outcomes rather than theory. The only thing that changes is the context you give in your prompt.

For adult learners, tell the AI to emphasize relevance and application: "Assume learners are working professionals with limited time. Focus on skills they can apply immediately." For younger students, ask for age-appropriate examples and more scaffolding.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Being too vague. "Make a lesson" gets you generic filler. Specific inputs get you a usable draft.

Trusting without checking. Treat AI output as a knowledgeable but fallible assistant. Verify anything you'll present as fact.

Over-relying on one prompt. The magic is in the back-and-forth. Refine in small steps rather than expecting perfection on the first try.

Losing your voice. A plan should still sound like you and fit your teaching style. Edit tone and examples so it feels authentic, not machine-generated.

Building a Reusable Template Library
